BMW Repair for fan belt tensioners
Symptoms :
- Car got rattle coming from the front end of car.
- Power steering is not as smooth as it used be.
- A squeak when first start car in the morning.
- Hear a squeel when car full lock
BMW REPAIR STEP :
1. First off, measure the voltage of your battery when the car is running, it should be around 14v if the alternator is spinning properly,if the voltage is lower or hunting between 12 and 14v would try a new fan belt first as that would be cheaper than a new pulley.
2. If that doesn’t sort it then try the pulley. If you don’t want to change the belt go to an industrial shop and buy a can of ‘belt dressing spray’ it’s a spray for drive belts that are slipping, it will be a very quick way of finding out if the fan belt is slipping.
3. Also try listening for the sound, if you get a big screw driver or metal bar, place one end of it on the power steering pump and push your ear against the other end it acts like a stethoscope and you will be able to hear if the pump is faulty, do the same for the tensioner pulley, but put the screw driver or bar on a part of the engine that the pulley bolts to (as close as u can get to the pulley while the engine is running).
