BMW Repair - This is for the M52 and M54 engine oil level sensor..
ok i wont bore you with the oil changing process but you “MUST” drain the engine oil to change the level sensor so follow a good oil service procedure..
this procedure is possible with your standard BMW car jack on the front drivers side jacking point raised to a good height everything is accessible just about, if you are draining the oil remember to lower the car to normal level during the draining process..
after you have drained the oil you need to remove the undertray there are 7 captive phillips head screws and 3 rawplug type fasteners to remove the undertray..
undertray screws

a household fork and pull the centre pin from valance rawplugs and they will release themselves
fork

next you have to remove the front chassis reinforcement plate to gain access to the level sensor, this is held on by 8x17mm head size bolts (ive seen some that have 16mm bolts mine had 17mm the same as the sump plug)…
one of the 8 reinforcement plate bolts location

with reinforcement plate removed you will see the sensor at the rear of the sump with an electrical connector on it squeeze the sides to release the plug from the sensor they can be a bit sticky to unplug..

next you need to remove the 3x10mm nuts securing the sensor it is advisable to soak these for 5 mins with WD40 as they can snap easily.
10mm nuts

the sensor can now be removed this can be difficult as it is well on there usually some carefull persuasion with a screwdriver maybe neccassary..
sensor removed a good time to make sure the face is nice and clean for the new sensor..
sensor removed

wet the seal with oil on the new sensor and fit the new sensor and tighten nuts DO NOT maul these nuts tight reconnect the plug to your new sensor..

thats it refill your engine with oil making sure you have fitted the sump plug, lower the car run it for 10 mins make sure all is good if it is raise the car and refit your reinforcement plate and undertray..
