BMW Repair – BMW E36 318i Cleaning Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor

BMW Repair – DO NOT recommend doing this with the “Barn Door” Style MAF Found on some models. This is mainly for “Hot Film” Style Sensors

With a dirty MAF, you usually have flat spots at a certain Rpm.Running rich, High Fuel consumption. Usually cleaning the MAF remedies these issues.

BMW Repair Tools that you need:

  • A Film Style MAF
  • Screwdriver
  • Paper Towels
  • Qty 1 32 Oz Bottle or 2 16 Oz bottles of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Qty 1 2 Gallon Ziploc type storage bag or equivalent

follow this step

  1. Locate your Air flow sensor in the engine Compartment. Remove any electrical connectors and go forward with removing the hose clamps (2).

Lift out the MAF and proceed to the next step.

  2. Now that we have removed the MAF go ahead and give it a good once over to remove any dust or junk that may be caked onto the exterior housing so we don’t pollute our chemical bath.

  3. Now go ahead and grab your 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and begin pouring it into your large Ziploc bag.

Now go ahead and drop it in and swish it in there back and fourth for 3 minutes or so. You will notice some color change in the alcohol which is good, this shows it’s cleaning off all the Oil particles if you use a K&M filter and all the other junk that was accumulating inside the housing and on the sensor.

  4. Now remove it from the bag and let stand for about 30 minutes just to be sure this thing is completely dry before you reinstall.
